10 Practical Ways Christians Can Pursue Holiness in Everyday Life

In Leviticus God gives this clear command:

“You must be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy.”

This command can sound intimidating at first. But holiness is not reserved for pastors, missionaries, or monks. God calls every believer to live a holy life.

Holiness simply means living a life that is set apart for God.

It is not about perfection. It is about direction—moving closer to God and becoming more like Him every day.

Here are ten practical ways Christians can pursue holiness in everyday life.

1. Spend Time with God Daily

Holiness begins with a relationship.

The more time we spend with God, the more our hearts begin to reflect His. Reading Scripture, praying, obeying and quietly listening to God shapes our thoughts and attitudes.

This is why Jesus Christ often withdrew to lonely places to pray.

Time with God changes us.

2. Guard What Enters Your Mind

What we watch, read, and listen to shapes our inner life.

If we constantly fill our minds with negativity, impurity, or anger, it will influence how we think and act. Holiness means being intentional about what we allow into our minds.

The Bible teaches that transformation begins with a renewed mind.

3. Speak Words That Build Others Up

Holiness shows up in our conversations.

Gossip, sarcasm, criticism, and harsh words damage people and dishonor God. Instead, believers should speak words that encourage, comfort, and strengthen others.

Our speech should reflect the heart of God.

4. Practice Integrity in Every Situation

A holy life is an honest life.

This means telling the truth, keeping promises, paying debts, and doing what is right even when no one is watching.

Character is often revealed in small decisions.

5. Treat People with Kindness and Respect

In Leviticus God connects holiness with how we treat others.

Holiness includes showing compassion to the poor, fairness in business, and respect for others. One of the clearest marks of a holy life is kindness.

People should experience the love of God through the way we treat them.

6. Be Quick to Repent

Even sincere Christians make mistakes.

Holiness does not mean never failing. It means quickly turning back to God when we do. When we confess our sins, God forgives us and restores our relationship with Him.

A humble and repentant heart keeps us close to God.

7. Choose Forgiveness Over Bitterness

Bitterness hardens the heart and damages the soul.

Holiness means releasing resentment and choosing forgiveness, even when it is difficult. This reflects the grace we ourselves have received from God.

Forgiveness brings freedom.

8. Serve Others

Selfishness pulls us away from holiness, but serving others draws us closer to God.

Jesus lived a life of service. When we help others—whether through encouragement, generosity, or practical help—we are reflecting the heart of Christ.

Holiness grows through humble service.

9. Surround Yourself with Godly People

The people we spend time with influence the direction of our lives.

Friendships with other believers provide encouragement, accountability, and wisdom. Together we help each other stay focused on following Christ.

Holiness often grows best in community.

10. Keep Your Eyes on Jesus

Ultimately, holiness is not about trying harder—it is about staying focused on Christ.

The more we look to Jesus Christ, the more our lives begin to reflect His character. His humility, love, purity, and obedience become the model for our lives.

Holiness grows when our attention stays fixed on Him.

A Lifelong Journey

Holiness is not achieved in a single day. It is a lifelong journey of becoming more like God.

Step by step, choice by choice, the Holy Spirit shapes us into people who reflect the character of our Heavenly Father.

And when believers live this way, the world begins to see something beautiful:

A life that truly belongs to God.
