Be Holy Because God Is Holy

One of the most striking commands in the Bible appears in the book of Leviticus:

“You must be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy.” (Leviticus 19:2)

At first glance, this command can feel overwhelming. How can ordinary people ever live up to the holiness of God? Yet this statement reveals something powerful about the heart of God and His plan for His people.

Holiness Begins with God

Holiness does not begin with us—it begins with God.

When God says, “Be holy,” He is not simply giving a rule. He is revealing His nature. Holiness means being set apart, pure, and devoted entirely to God. God Himself is perfectly holy—morally pure, righteous, and completely separate from sin.

God’s desire has always been that His people reflect His character. In other words, the people who belong to God should begin to look like Him.

Just as children often resemble their parents, God’s children are meant to resemble Him.

Holiness Is a Way of Life

In Leviticus, holiness is not limited to worship services or religious rituals. It touches everyday life.

In the very same chapter, God commands His people to:

  • Care for the poor
  • Speak truthfully
  • Treat others fairly
  • Respect their parents
  • Avoid gossip and slander
  • Love their neighbors

Holiness, in God’s eyes, affects how we treat people, how we speak, how we work, and how we live when no one is watching.

Holiness is not simply avoiding sin—it is living a life that reflects God’s goodness.

Holiness Is Still God’s Call Today

Hundreds of years later, the apostle Peter the Apostle repeated this same command to Christians. In 1 Peter he wrote:

“You must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy.”

God’s standard has not changed. His desire is still the same: that His people would live differently from the world around them.

Not perfectly—but intentionally.

Holiness Is Not Earned—It Is Pursued

The good news is that holiness is not something we achieve by trying harder. It begins with what Jesus Christ has already done for us.

Through Jesus, our sins are forgiven and we are made right with God. Then, through the work of the Holy Spirit, God begins to transform our lives from the inside out.

Holiness becomes a journey.

Day by day, decision by decision, we choose what honors God.

A Higher Way to Live

In a culture that often celebrates selfishness, anger, and impurity, God calls His people to a higher way of living.

  • To speak truth when lies are common
  • To forgive when others hold grudges
  • To act with integrity when compromise is easier
  • To love people who are difficult to love

This is what it looks like to reflect the holiness of God.

The Goal: Reflecting God to the World

Ultimately, God’s command to “be holy” is not about religious performance—it is about representing Him well.

When believers live holy lives, the world begins to see something different. They see integrity, kindness, purity, and love that points back to God Himself.

Holiness is not about becoming distant from people.

It is about becoming more like God.

And that has always been His plan for His people.
