In the Beginning Was the Word

A Reflection on John 1:1–5

Few passages in Scripture are as profound, poetic, and foundational as John 1:1–5. These opening lines don’t just introduce a gospel—they introduce us to eternity, to the nature of Christ, and to the very source of life and light.

Let’s walk through it carefully.

1. Jesus Is Eternal — “In the beginning…

John deliberately echoes Genesis:

“In the beginning was the Word…”

This is not the beginning of Jesus—it’s a statement that when the beginning began, He already was.

Jesus did not come into existence in Bethlehem. He was not created. He is eternal.

That means:

  • He existed before time
  • He stands outside creation
  • He is not limited like we are

This matters because only an eternal Savior can offer eternal life.

2. Jesus Is Personal — “The Word was with God

The phrase “with God” suggests relationship—face to face, in deep fellowship.

Jesus is not just a force or abstract power. He is personal. He exists in relationship within the Trinity.

This tells us something powerful:
God has always been relational.

And if we are made in His image, it makes sense why:

  • We long for connection
  • We thrive in relationship
  • We are not meant to walk alone

3. Jesus Is God — “The Word was God

John removes all ambiguity here.

Jesus is not just a teacher, prophet, or moral example. He is fully God.

That means:

  • His words carry ultimate authority
  • His promises are completely trustworthy
  • His sacrifice has infinite value

You cannot reduce Jesus to something comfortable. He demands a response.

4. Jesus Is Creator — “Through Him all things were made

Everything that exists—seen and unseen—came through Him.

Think about that:

  • The mountains you love to walk in
  • The oceans, the stars, the human body
  • Music, creativity, beauty

All of it traces back to Christ.

This gives life meaning. We are not accidents. We are created with intention and purpose.

5. Jesus Is Life — “In Him was life

Not just biological life—but true life:

  • Spiritual life
  • Abundant life
  • Eternal life

Apart from Him, we may exist—but we don’t fully live.

This is why so many people feel empty even when life looks full. Life disconnected from its source will always feel incomplete.

6. Jesus Is Light — “The life was the light of all mankind

Light reveals, guides, and gives hope.

Jesus:

  • Shows us who God is
  • Reveals truth in a confusing world
  • Exposes darkness, but also overcomes it

And then John gives us this powerful promise:

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

7. Darkness Does Not Win

This is one of the most hope-filled statements in all of Scripture.

Darkness is real:

  • Sin
  • Suffering
  • Confusion
  • Evil

But it is not ultimate.

Light is stronger.

No matter how dark things feel:

  • In your life
  • In your family
  • In the world

Darkness never has the final word—Jesus does.

Final Thought

John doesn’t begin his gospel with a story. He begins with a declaration:

Jesus is everything.

  • Eternal
  • Personal
  • Divine
  • Creator
  • Life-giver
  • Light-bringer

And here’s the real question this passage asks:

What will you do with Him?

Because if this is true—and it is—then knowing Jesus is not just important…

It is everything.
