Matthew 19:29 (NIV)
“And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.”
This verse hits hard, doesn’t it? Jesus doesn’t hide the cost of following Him. Right after the rich young ruler walks away sad because he couldn’t part with his wealth, Peter says, “We’ve left everything to follow You. What then will there be for us?” (v. 27). Jesus answers with this stunning promise.
I’ve read this verse countless times over 40+ years of leading worship and pastoring. It used to feel mostly like future hope—something for eternity. But the more I live it, the more I see it’s also for right now.

The Real Cost of Discipleship
Jesus lists real losses:
- Houses — stability, a place to call your own.
- Brothers, sisters, father, mother, children — the deepest family bonds.
- Fields/property — livelihood, security, future provision.
These aren’t hypothetical. Early followers faced family rejection, exile, or worse for naming Jesus as Lord. Today, it still happens: a new believer in a non-Christian home gets disowned; a worship leader goes through rejection; a family relocates for ministry and leaves extended relatives behind. The pain is real, and Jesus acknowledges it fully.
But notice the crucial phrase: “for My sake” (or “for My name’s sake” / “for the gospel” in parallel passages). This isn’t license to abandon responsibilities or run from hard relationships. It’s about choices made when loyalty to Jesus directly conflicts with other allegiances. The sacrifice flows out of love for Him.
The Hundredfold Return—Now and Forever
Jesus doesn’t just offer sympathy. He promises a hundred times as much in this present age (Mark 10:30 makes that explicit) plus eternal life.
What does “a hundred times” look like?
Not usually 100 new houses or 100 biological children—that literal reading doesn’t hold up. Jesus is painting a picture of abundant kingdom restoration:
- A multiplied spiritual family — “Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother” (Mark 3:35). Lose one family? Gain a global church family that loves, supports, prays, and opens homes to you. I’ve seen missionaries and persecuted believers experience this over and over—new “moms,” “dads,” “brothers,” and “sisters” who become closer than blood relatives.
- Houses and provision — One door closes, but kingdom doors fly open. Believers share homes, resources, meals. A traveling worship leader might lose a mortgage but gain a network of couches, guest rooms, and generous hosts worldwide.
- Joy, purpose, and presence — The richness of walking closely with Jesus, seeing lives changed through worship, experiencing God’s faithfulness in trials. Mark adds the honest note: “along with persecutions” (Mark 10:30). The hundredfold isn’t trouble-free—but the blessings outweigh the hardship.
And crowning it all: eternal life — not earned by our sacrifices, but received as part of the inheritance for those who follow Jesus.
Living the Promise Today
If you’ve paid a price to follow Christ—strained family ties, lost opportunities, sacrificed comfort—Jesus sees it. Nothing is wasted. He who left the glory of heaven knows sacrifice intimately, and He repays generously.
For those of us in ministry, this promise speaks directly:
- When leading costs you popularity or approval…
- When saying “yes” to God’s call means saying “no” to other paths…
- When faithfulness feels lonely…
Hear Him again: “You will receive a hundred times as much—and inherit eternal life.”
The greatest return isn’t material stuff. It’s Him—and in Him, we find everything we truly need, now and forever.
Prayer
Jesus, thank You for seeing every sacrifice made for Your name. Strengthen those who feel the cost today. Multiply Your family around us. Let us experience the hundredfold reality of Your presence, provision, and people. Help us trust You more deeply and introduce more people to You. Amen.
Keep leading, keep following—He’s worth it all.
