The Power of Mustard Seed Faith: Moving Mountains

Matthew 17:20 (NLT)
“You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.”

These words from Jesus come at a pivotal moment. The disciples had just failed to cast out a demon from a boy, despite their efforts. Jesus rebuked their lack of faith (or “unbelief”) and offered this striking illustration. It’s not a gentle encouragement—it’s a challenge. The disciples weren’t lacking in quantity of faith so much as in its quality. They had tried in their own strength, but true faith relies entirely on God’s power.

The Mustard Seed: Tiny Yet Transformative

Jesus chose the mustard seed deliberately. In the ancient Near East, it was commonly regarded as the smallest of all seeds—about 1-2 millimeters in diameter, barely visible between your fingers. Yet, when planted, it grows into a large shrub or small tree, sometimes reaching 10 feet tall, providing shelter and shade.

This contrast is key. The mustard seed starts minuscule but holds incredible potential. Jesus isn’t saying faith needs to be huge to accomplish great things. Even the tiniest genuine faith—placed in an all-powerful God—can produce extraordinary results.

Moving Mountains: Literal or Metaphorical?

The image of commanding a mountain to move is dramatic. In Jewish tradition, “removing mountains” was a metaphor for overcoming impossible obstacles. Jesus uses hyperbole to emphasize that nothing is impossible with God-centered faith.

But does this mean we should literally try moving literal mountains? Probably not—Jesus isn’t giving a magic formula for landscaping. Instead, He’s teaching that authentic faith trusts God’s power to handle the impossible in our lives: healing, reconciliation, breaking addictions, overcoming fear, or facing overwhelming challenges.

In the parallel passage in Luke 17:6, Jesus mentions uprooting a mulberry tree—another everyday image of something deeply rooted and immovable. The point remains the same: small faith in a big God can uproot the deepest barriers.

Why “Mustard Seed” Faith Works

The power isn’t in the size of our faith—it’s in who we place it in. Even a mustard-seed-sized trust in ourselves accomplishes little. But a mustard-seed-sized trust in the Almighty God can move mountains because He moves them.

Jesus’ words also remind us that faith grows. Just as the mustard seed becomes a tree, small faith can expand when nurtured through prayer, Scripture, obedience, and community.

Applying It Today

  • When doubt creeps in: Remember, Jesus didn’t say “if you have great faith.” He said even the smallest amount is enough if it’s genuine.
  • Facing impossible situations: Speak to your “mountain” in prayer, trusting God to act.
  • Building faith: Start small. Act on what you believe, even if it’s tiny, and watch God grow it.

Final Thought

Jesus’ rebuke wasn’t meant to shame the disciples but to awaken them. The same invitation stands for us: Nothing is impossible when our faith—even as small as a mustard seed—is rooted in God’s limitless power.

So, where is your mountain today? Speak to it. Trust Him. And watch what God can do with the smallest seed of faith.

What “mountain” are you facing right now? How can you apply mustard seed faith this week? Share in the comments—I’d love to hear your thoughts!
