How You Can Be Sure — And What It Should Mean for Your Life
“This I know: God is on my side!”
— Psalm 56:9 (NLT)
Have you ever needed reassurance in a tough season — when fear threatened to paralyze you, when betrayal cut deep, or when uncertainty loomed ahead? Psalm 56 was written in one of those moments. David was being hunted down, misunderstood, and slandered. Yet right in the middle of this dark hour, he makes a bold declaration: “This I know: God is on my side!”
That statement is more than a hopeful wish or motivational quote. It’s a deeply rooted conviction, forged in the fires of hardship. And it’s one we can hold onto, too.

How Can You Know That God Is on Your Side?
1. God Has Already Proven His Love Through Jesus
Romans 5:8 tells us, “But God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
If you’ve placed your trust in Jesus Christ, you can be absolutely sure God is not against you. He is not waiting to punish or shame you. Through Christ, He has already chosen you, forgiven you, and brought you into His family. You are no longer His enemy — you are His beloved child.
2. The Bible Says It Over and Over
From Genesis to Revelation, God affirms His loyalty to His people:
- “The Lord is on my side; I will not fear.” (Psalm 118:6)
- “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31)
- “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)
This isn’t just David’s personal feeling — it’s a theme that echoes throughout Scripture.
3. The Holy Spirit Confirms It Within You
Romans 8:16 says, “The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.”
Even in moments of doubt, God’s Spirit reassures us of His presence and favor. It’s an inner witness that reminds you — even when your emotions are shaky — that you belong to Him.
How Should This Influence How You Live?
1. Live Fearlessly
If God is on your side, what can man do to you? David says in Psalm 56:11, “I trust in God, so why should I be afraid?”
You no longer have to be driven by fear of failure, rejection, or the future. God’s presence gives you courage to take bold steps — in your faith, relationships, ministry, and calling.
2. Walk Confidently in Your Identity
You’re not just a sinner struggling to get by. You’re a redeemed child of God, favored and empowered.
Let that truth shape how you talk to yourself, how you pray, and how you face each day.
3. Respond to Opposition with Grace and Strength
David didn’t lash out at his enemies. He brought his fears to God, trusted in His justice, and walked forward. When you know God is on your side, you don’t need to seek revenge or prove yourself. You can rest, knowing He’s fighting your battles.
4. Live a Life of Gratitude and Worship
Psalm 56 ends with David praising God: “I will fulfill my vows to you, O God, and will offer a sacrifice of thanks for your help.”
When you realize God is for you, gratitude becomes your natural response. Worship flows more freely. You stop living like a victim and start living like someone who’s already won.
Final Thought: Let This Truth Settle Deep in Your Spirit
You may not always feel like God is on your side — but the truth isn’t anchored in your feelings. It’s anchored in His promises. When life shakes you, come back to this declaration:
“This I know: God is on my side!”
Let that truth shape your prayers, your choices, your confidence, and your worship.
