What Is Faith?

In the Gospel of Mark chapter 5, we meet a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years. She had suffered physically, financially, and socially. According to the law in Leviticus, her condition would have made her ceremonially unclean. She lived isolated, exhausted, and likely ashamed.

Then she heard about Jesus.

She made her way through the crowd and said to herself, “If I just touch His clothes, I will be healed.” She reached out. She touched the edge of His garment.

Immediately, the bleeding stopped.

Jesus turned and said, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”

So let’s ask the question:

What Is Faith?

Faith is not wishful thinking.
Faith is not religious optimism.
Faith is not pretending everything is fine.

Faith is confident trust in the character and power of Jesus.

That woman didn’t have perfect theology. She didn’t make a public declaration. She didn’t stand on a stage and testify. She simply believed that Jesus was who He said He was—and acted on it.

Faith always moves you.

1. Faith Hears

The text says she heard about Jesus.

Faith begins when we hear truth. The Bible says, “Faith comes by hearing.” When truth about Christ enters your heart, something begins to awaken. Hope rises. Possibility stirs.

If you’re not feeding your faith, don’t be surprised if it feels weak.

2. Faith Pushes Through

There was a crowd. She was weak. She wasn’t supposed to be there. She risked embarrassment and rejection.

Faith pushes past obstacles.

It says, “I don’t care what stands in my way. I’m getting to Jesus.”

Real faith is determined. It doesn’t quit easily.

3. Faith Reaches

She touched His garment.

That small act was huge. It was a physical expression of inward trust.

Faith is not passive. It reaches. It acts. It obeys.

You don’t just believe in your mind—you step forward with your life.

4. Faith Draws Power

The moment she touched Him, Jesus felt power go out from Him.

Think about that.

Many people were bumping into Jesus that day. Only one touched Him in faith.

You can be around Jesus and not experience Him.

Faith is what connects you to His power.

5. Faith Brings Relationship

Jesus didn’t let her slip away anonymously. He called her forward and said, “Daughter.”

That’s intimate language.

Faith doesn’t just bring healing. It brings you into relationship. It moves you from being a desperate outsider to a beloved daughter.

Faith is not about how strong you feel.
It’s about how strong Jesus is.

The woman’s faith may have felt fragile—but it was directed toward the right Person.

And that changes everything.

If you’re carrying something long and painful—twelve years or more—don’t quit. Don’t settle for quiet despair.

Hear the truth.
Push through the crowd.
Reach out.

Faith is simply this:

Trusting Jesus enough to move toward Him.

And when you do, you’ll discover what she discovered—

He is more than enough.
