What Is The Most Important Thing I Should Be Doing Right Now?

We live in a time of endless choices and constant noise. Our phones buzz, emails arrive, news breaks, and opportunities compete for our attention. In the middle of it all, many people quietly wonder:

“What is the most important thing I should be doing right now?”

It’s a wise question. Life becomes far more meaningful when we learn to focus on what truly matters.

Jesus once answered this question very clearly.

A religious leader asked Him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”

Jesus replied:

“You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.”
— Gospel of Mark 12:30

In other words, the most important thing any person can do at any moment is love God fully.

Everything else in life flows from that.

Loving God Comes First

Notice that Jesus did not say the most important thing is:

  • being successful
  • making money
  • achieving your goals
  • gaining recognition
  • even doing good works

Those things may have value, but they are not first.

The first thing is a relationship with God.

When we put God first in our hearts—when we love Him, seek Him, and walk with Him—life begins to fall into its proper order.

One Thing Is Needed

Jesus also illustrated this truth during a visit to the home of two sisters.

One sister, Martha, was busy preparing and serving. The other sister, Mary, sat quietly at Jesus’ feet listening to Him.

Martha was frustrated and asked Jesus to tell Mary to help.

Jesus responded:

“Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed.”
— Gospel of Luke 10:41-42

Mary had chosen the better thing—being with Jesus.

It’s a reminder for all of us:
Before we do things for God, we must spend time with God.

The First Question of Every Day

Perhaps one of the most helpful habits in life is asking a simple question:

“Lord, what is the most important thing I should be doing right now?”

Sometimes the answer is:

  • Pray.
  • Read the Scriptures.
  • Encourage someone.
  • Finish the work in front of you.
  • Rest.
  • Repent.
  • Make a phone call.
  • Help a person in need.

But the starting point is always the same: turn your heart toward God.

The Power of the Present Moment

We often worry about the future or regret the past.

But God works with us in the present moment.

Right now is where we love Him.
Right now is where we obey Him.
Right now is where we trust Him.

The Christian life is not simply about making big decisions every few years. It is about thousands of small decisions each day to walk with God.

A Simple Prayer

If you’re unsure what to do today, you could begin with a prayer like this:

“Lord, help me love You with all my heart today. Show me the most important thing I should be doing right now, and give me the grace to do it.”

That prayer has a remarkable way of bringing clarity.

And when you live that way—moment by moment—your life slowly becomes exactly what God intended.

Because the most important thing you can ever do
is love God with your whole heart today. 🙏
