Have you ever found yourself wondering, What should I do next? Maybe you’re facing a difficult decision. Perhaps you’ve come to a crossroads in your career, your family, your ministry, or your finances. Or maybe you’re simply asking God, “What is Your plan for my life?”
If that’s where you are today, you’re not alone.
One of the greatest promises in the Bible is that God doesn’t leave His children to figure life out on their own. He delights in leading those who trust Him.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take.” (Proverbs 3:5–6, NLT)
Notice that this promise begins with trust.
We naturally want to understand everything before we take the next step. We want to see the entire road ahead. But God usually gives us enough light for the next step—not the next hundred.
Faith means trusting God’s wisdom above our own.
God Guides Those Who Walk With Him
God’s guidance is rarely a loud voice from heaven. More often, He leads us through His Word, through prayer, through the quiet prompting of His Holy Spirit, through wise counsel, and by opening and closing doors.
As we stay close to Him, His direction becomes clearer.
Psalm 119:105 says:
“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.”
Notice that God’s Word is a lamp, not a floodlight. A lamp gives enough light for the next few steps. As we obey what God has already shown us, He faithfully reveals what comes next.
Sometimes Waiting Is Part of God’s Direction
One of the hardest parts of following God is waiting.
We pray for answers, but heaven seems silent. We wonder why God hasn’t shown us the next step.
Yet waiting doesn’t mean God has forgotten you.
Sometimes He is preparing you before He prepares your circumstances.
Sometimes He is building patience, humility, dependence, or character before opening the next door.
His timing is always perfect, even when it doesn’t match ours.
Don’t Let Fear Make Your Decisions
Fear is a terrible guide.
Fear says, “Stay where it’s safe.”
Faith says, “Follow God wherever He leads.”
When we allow fear to make our decisions, we often miss the opportunities God has prepared for us.
Instead, ask yourself:
- What does God’s Word say?
- Have I prayed about this?
- Have I sought wise counsel?
- Which choice allows me to honor Christ the most?
God is far more interested in shaping your character than simply making your life comfortable.
God Already Knows the Way
The wonderful truth is this: you may not know where you’re going, but God does.
He sees tomorrow as clearly as today.
Nothing surprises Him.
Nothing catches Him off guard.
And He promises to direct those who place their confidence in Him.
So if you’re searching for direction today, don’t panic.
Draw near to Jesus.
Spend time in His Word.
Pray.

Listen.
Obey the next step He places before you.
As you do, you’ll discover that the safest place to be is following the One who already knows the way.
Prayer
Father, I need Your wisdom and direction. Help me to trust You even when I cannot see the whole path ahead. Give me the courage to obey what You show me today. Keep me from leaning on my own understanding, and lead me in the way that pleases You. Thank You for being my faithful Shepherd who never leads His children astray. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
