“I was found by people who were not looking for Me.
I showed Myself to those who were not asking for Me.”
— Romans 10:20 NLT
There are times when we find God because we are desperately searching for Him.
We pray. We read the Bible. We ask questions. We seek answers. We cry out, “God, where are You?”
But there are other times when God finds us when we aren’t looking for Him at all.
That is the amazing grace of God.
Paul quotes these words from Isaiah to explain something remarkable about God’s relationship with humanity. Israel had received God’s Word, His promises, and His covenant, yet many had rejected the Messiah. Meanwhile, Gentiles—people who had not been pursuing God in the same way—were responding to the gospel and discovering Him.
God was reaching people who weren’t looking for Him.
And He still does.
1. God Takes the Initiative
Sometimes we imagine that our relationship with God begins when we decide to look for Him.
But Scripture tells a different story.
God is often the One who makes the first move.
Jesus said:
“You didn’t choose Me. I chose you.”
— John 15:16
Think about your own story.
There may have been a moment when you thought you were searching for God, only to realize later that God had been searching for you all along.
A conversation.
A song.
A Bible verse.
A friend.
A difficult circumstance.
A church service.
A seemingly random encounter.
What looked like coincidence may have been God’s providence.
2. You Don’t Have to Have Everything Figured Out
Some people think they need to understand Christianity before they can come to Christ.
They want all their questions answered.
They want to understand the Bible.
They want to know exactly what they believe.
But this passage reminds us that people can encounter God before they have everything figured out.
You don’t have to know everything to begin seeking Jesus.
You don’t even have to know that you’re seeking Him.
Sometimes the first step toward God is simply responding when He reveals Himself.
3. God Can Meet You in Unexpected Places
God doesn’t limit Himself to our carefully planned spiritual experiences.
He can speak to us in ordinary moments.
A walk.
A conversation.
A song on the radio.
A Scripture we’ve read a hundred times.
A child’s question.
A moment of silence.
A crisis.
A beautiful sunset.
A sudden realization.
God has countless ways of getting our attention.
And sometimes we discover Him in places where we never expected to find Him.
4. God Knows How to Reach People Who Seem Far Away
Perhaps you know someone who seems completely uninterested in God.
Maybe you’ve prayed for them for years.
You’ve talked with them. You’ve invited them. You’ve shared your faith.
Nothing seems to change.
Don’t give up.
God knows how to find people who aren’t looking for Him.
The person who seems spiritually distant today may encounter God tomorrow in a way you could never have orchestrated.
We can pray.
We can love.
We can share the gospel.
But ultimately, God is the One who reveals Himself to the human heart.
5. Don’t Underestimate Divine Appointments
Sometimes God puts us in someone’s path because He intends to use us to help them find Him.
Philip encountered the Ethiopian official on a desert road (Acts 8).
Paul encountered Lydia beside a river (Acts 16).
Jesus encountered Zacchaeus in a tree (Luke 19).
Peter encountered Cornelius through a remarkable series of divine circumstances (Acts 10).
None of these encounters were accidents.
God was arranging circumstances so that people could encounter Him.
And He still does that today.
You may be someone’s unexpected divine appointment.
6. God Can Reveal Himself Before We Know What We’re Looking For
One of the most beautiful things about grace is that God can begin working in someone’s life before they recognize what He is doing.
A person may begin asking questions.
They may become dissatisfied with the life they’ve been living.
They may suddenly become interested in spiritual things.
They may meet a Christian who genuinely loves them.
They may hear a message that seems strangely personal.
They may pick up a Bible.
They may whisper a prayer for the first time in years.
Something is happening.
They may not recognize it yet.
But God does.
7. Your Story May Be More Providential Than You Realize
Looking backward can sometimes give us a different perspective on our lives.
We see people who came into our lives at exactly the right time.
We remember circumstances that changed our direction.
We recall Scriptures that seemed to speak directly to us.
We remember the person who invited us to church.
We remember the song that touched our heart.
We remember the moment we finally surrendered.
At the time, we may have called these things coincidences.
Years later, we may see the fingerprints of God everywhere.
God was working before we knew He was working.
8. Keep Praying for the Ones Who Aren’t Looking
If you have a prodigal son or daughter, a friend who has walked away from God, a family member who doesn’t believe, or someone who seems completely uninterested in spiritual things, keep praying.
Don’t assume their present disinterest is their final chapter.
The God who says, “I was found by people who were not looking for Me,” specializes in unexpected encounters.
You don’t know what God may be doing beneath the surface.
Keep loving them.
Keep praying.
Keep the door open.
And trust God with the timing.
9. We Are Called to Make God Visible
The second part of the verse says:
“I showed Myself to those who were not asking for Me.”
God uses people to help reveal Himself to others.
That means our lives matter.
A genuine act of kindness can reveal something about God’s character.
A forgiving spirit can reveal grace.
A life of integrity can reveal truth.
A worshipper who genuinely loves God can make the reality of God visible to others.
Our job isn’t to force people to believe.
Our job is to faithfully represent Jesus and leave room for the Holy Spirit to work.
10. Never Assume Someone Is Too Far Away
Perhaps the greatest encouragement in this passage is this:
Never decide that someone is beyond the reach of God’s grace.
God can find people who aren’t looking for Him.
He can reach people who have rejected Him.
He can speak to people who aren’t listening.
He can soften hearts that seem hard.
He can use circumstances we would never choose.
And He can turn a person toward Himself in ways we never imagined.
That should give us hope.
God Is Still Finding People
Romans 10:20 reminds us that God’s grace is wonderfully persistent.
Some people are searching for Him.
Others aren’t.
Some are asking questions.
Others aren’t interested.
Some are praying.
Others don’t know how to pray.
But God knows every heart.
And sometimes the greatest spiritual discovery of someone’s life begins with something they weren’t even looking for.
Maybe that’s your story.
And perhaps there is someone in your life whose story is still being written.
So don’t give up on them.
Keep praying.
Keep loving.
Keep pointing people toward Jesus.
Because the God who says, “I was found by people who were not looking for Me,” is still finding people today.
