Seven Blessings Of ‘The Fear Of The Lord’

In the Bible, the fear of the Lord is often mentioned as a positive attribute and is associated with several benefits and blessings. The phrase “fear of the Lord” can be understood in different ways, but in a biblical context, it generally refers to a reverential awe, respect, and submission towards God. It involves recognizing God’s authority, holiness, and power, and living in accordance with His commandments.

Here are some of the biblical benefits and blessings associated with the fear of the Lord:

  1. Wisdom: Proverbs 9:10 states, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” The fear of the Lord leads to a deep understanding of God’s character and ways, which brings wisdom and discernment in life’s decisions.
  2. Protection and Deliverance: Psalm 34:7 says, “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him, and He delivers them.” The fear of the Lord can provide divine protection and deliverance from various troubles and dangers.
  3. Guidance: Psalm 25:14 declares, “The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear Him, and He makes known to them His covenant.” Those who fear the Lord are granted divine guidance and understanding of God’s purposes and promises.
  4. Blessings and Provision: Psalm 128:1 states, “Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in His ways.” The fear of the Lord is often associated with blessings, prosperity, and God’s provision in various aspects of life.
  5. Satisfaction and Contentment: Psalm 145:19 affirms, “He fulfills the desire of those who fear Him; He also hears their cry and saves them.” The fear of the Lord brings contentment and satisfaction as God meets the desires and needs of those who reverence Him.
  6. Longevity and Posterity: Proverbs 10:27 states, “The fear of the Lord prolongs life, but the years of the wicked will be short.” While this is not an absolute guarantee, it suggests that the fear of the Lord can contribute to a long and fulfilling life.
  7. Instruction and Correction: Proverbs 15:33 says, “The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor.” The fear of the Lord leads to teachability, humility, and correction, allowing individuals to grow in character and maturity.

It’s important to note that the fear of the Lord does not imply being terrified or scared of God but rather having a deep reverence and awe for Him. It involves a loving relationship with God, characterized by obedience, trust, and awe-inspired worship.

These benefits are not automatic or mechanical results of fearing the Lord, but they are often seen as natural consequences of a genuine and wholehearted devotion to God. The fear of the Lord is meant to shape our attitudes, actions, and priorities, leading to a life that honors and pleases God.

Seven Benefits Of Loving God

Loving God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength is not only a commandment but also an invitation to experience His favour in our lives. When we wholeheartedly devote ourselves to God, we open the door to a deep and transformative relationship that brings blessings, guidance, and fulfillment. Here are seven remarkable benefits that come from loving God with our entire being.

1. Intimacy with God: Loving God allows us to experience a profound intimacy with Him. As we devote ourselves to Him, He becomes the source of our life and sustenance. Our hearts find contentment and fulfillment in His presence, as He becomes our constant companion and guide.

Deuteronomy 30:20: “that you may love the Lord your God, obey Him, and hold fast to Him. For the Lord is your life…”

2. Blessings and Prosperity: Wholehearted love for God opens the door to His blessings and prosperity. When we align ourselves with His will, He showers us with His favor and abundance. He blesses the work of our hands, our relationships, and every aspect of our lives.

Deuteronomy 30:9: “The Lord your God will make you abundantly prosperous in all the work of your hand…”

3. Guidance and Wisdom: By loving God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, we position ourselves to receive His guidance and wisdom. He becomes our steadfast source of direction, bringing His light to our paths and helping us make wise decisions. Trusting in Him and acknowledging Him in all our ways allows us to walk confidently in His guidance.

Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your path.”

4. Peace and Contentment: Loving God with our entire being brings an unshakeable peace and contentment that transcends our circumstances. As we fix our minds on Him, He grants us perfect peace, assuring us of His presence and sovereignty in all situations.

Isaiah 26:3: “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.”

5. Transformation and Spiritual Growth: Wholehearted love for God leads to transformative change and spiritual growth. As we keep our eyes on the Lord, we are progressively transformed into His likeness, developing the fruit of the Spirit and growing in our character. Our love for God becomes evident in our actions and interactions with others.

2 Corinthians 3:18: “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.”

Galatians 5:22-23: ‘The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”

6. Purpose and Fulfillment: Loving God opens the door to discovering and fulfilling our God-given purpose. As we delight in Him, He plants desires within our hearts that align with His plans. He guides us to walk in our unique calling, bringing us a sense of fulfillment and making an impact for His kingdom.

Psalm 37:4: “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.”

7. Eternal Life: The greatest benefit of loving God is the promise of eternal life. Jesus emphasized that loving God with our entire being is the greatest commandment. Through our love for Him, we enter into a relationship that extends beyond this earthly life, securing our place in His eternal presence.

Mark 12:30: “And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.”

Loving God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength is not only a commandment but also a gateway to a life filled with blessings, guidance, peace, purpose, and eternal hope. As we devote ourselves to Him, we experience an intimate relationship, grow spiritually, and discover our true purpose. May we embrace these seven benefits of loving God and allow them to transform our lives, enabling us to be living examples of His love and grace.

How Do You Recharge Your Batteries?

In life it is sometimes easy to lose focus, to lose your inspiration, to get discouraged! Let me tell you what helps me to stay focused, what helps me to stay on track. Let me tell you what inspires me!

Every morning, I wake early and spend time with my Creator. I spend time with the One who saw me in my mother’s womb. I spend time with the One who spoke the universe into existence. For me, there is no better way to start the day.

I look forward to getting up in the morning and reading the ancient words that are life to over 2 billion Christians around the world. I love reading the lyrics of the great song writers of the Bible. I love reading the words and proverbs of the wisest man who ever lived. I love reading the stories of men and woman of faith who have gone through struggles and failures, but who have still listened to the still small voice that keeps their hearts on course to God.

Reading God’s Word every day keeps me inspired. When I read the ‘words in red’ and get to know God’s gift sent down to earth. I am inspired! Do you want to know what God is like? Get to know Jesus!

Years ago, when I was beginning my journey to knowing Jesus, I read through the Gospels – Matthew to John – five times in a month. For the last thirty-four years I have read through the entire Bible every year. God’s word is life. God’s word is truth. Human ‘truth’ changes with the constant shifting of our culture, but real truth is unchanging.

Words like “Love your neighbour as yourself’”, “Do to others as you would like them to do to you“, “Love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind and strength” or “Go into all the world and preach the gospel“… Those words give me inspiration. Those words keep me on track. Those words are ‘truth’.

Do you want to stay inspired? My suggestion is to take your Bible off the shelf or use an online reading plan and read the Bible. It will inspire you, it will recharge your battery! It has changed my life. It can change yours!

Here is a link to the online New Living Testament Bible reading plan that I follow… Bibleplan.org. It gives you Old Testament and New Testament readings every day and goes through the Bible chronologically in a year. You can add your email at the bottom of the page and the readings will be emailed to you daily. It takes about 15 minutes a day to do. I also add reading one Proverb and one Psalm per day. Try it, you’ll love it!

Learn From The Ants

The proverb “Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and become wise! Though they have no prince or governor or ruler to make them work, they labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter” (Proverbs 6:6-8 NLT) conveys several valuable lessons:

  1. Industriousness: Ants are known for their diligent work ethic. They work hard during the summer to gather food and prepare for the winter when resources may be scarce. This proverb encourages individuals to be industrious, to work diligently, and to make good use of their time and resources.
  2. Self-motivation: Ants do not need external supervision or authority figures to make them work. They are self-driven and take responsibility for their own survival. Similarly, this proverb encourages individuals to take initiative, be self-motivated, and not rely solely on others to push them forward.
  3. Planning and foresight: Ants demonstrate the ability to plan ahead and anticipate future needs. They gather food during the summer when it is plentiful, storing it for the winter when resources are scarce. This proverb emphasizes the importance of planning, being prepared, and thinking about the long-term consequences of one’s actions.
  4. Equality and cooperation: The proverb mentions that ants have “no prince or governor or ruler to make them work.” It suggests that ants work together in a cooperative manner, without the need for hierarchical authority. This aspect of the proverb highlights the importance of teamwork, collaboration, and the understanding that everyone has a role to play in achieving common goals.

  1. Communicate openly: Regularly communicate with the lead pastor to discuss the vision, goals, and plans for the church. Seek their input and provide updates on the music ministry’s activities, challenges, and successes. Effective communication ensures that both pastors are on the same page and working towards common objectives.
  2. Support the vision: Understand and align yourself with the lead pastor’s vision for the church. Show enthusiasm and dedication to the overall mission and direction of the church. Consider how the music ministry can contribute to and enhance the church’s goals and values.
  3. Be a team player: Demonstrate a willingness to work collaboratively with the lead pastor and other staff members. Offer your skills, expertise, and insights to assist with the broader ministry efforts. Foster a sense of unity and teamwork within the church by actively participating in joint initiatives.
  4. Seek guidance and feedback: Approach the lead pastor for guidance, advice, and feedback. Show humility and a desire to learn from their wisdom and experience. Regularly seeking their input helps to build trust and demonstrates your commitment to personal growth and improvement.

Leading Your Home God’s Way

As a Christian, learning to lead your home well involves applying biblical principles and values to your role as a leader. Here are some key aspects to consider:

  1. Seek Wisdom from God: Begin by seeking wisdom and guidance from God through prayer and studying the Bible. The Scriptures provide valuable insights on leadership, family, and relationships. Pray for discernment and the strength to lead with love, compassion, and integrity.
  2. Prioritize Your Relationship with God: Cultivate a strong personal relationship with God. This involves regular prayer, reading the Bible, and participating in spiritual disciplines such as worship, fasting, and meditation. By drawing closer to God, you can develop the character and values necessary for effective leadership.
  3. Embrace Servant Leadership: Jesus modeled servant leadership by humbly serving others. Apply this principle in your home by considering the needs and well-being of your spouse, children, and other family members before your own. Serve your family with love, kindness, and selflessness.
  4. Lead by Example: Your actions and attitudes have a significant impact on your family. Live out your faith consistently, demonstrating love, integrity, honesty, and respect. Be a positive role model for your spouse and children, reflecting Christ-like qualities in your daily life and being faithful in attending and supporting your local church. Love your wife and family like Christ loved the church.

Listen attentively to your spouse and children, understanding their needs, concerns, and dreams. Engage in meaningful conversations, and be willing to address conflicts and challenges with patience, empathy, and grace.
  6. Nurture Spiritual Growth: Create an environment that fosters spiritual growth within your home. Encourage regular prayer, and discussions about faith. Help your family members develop their relationship with God, providing resources and opportunities for them to grow spiritually. Find a good local vibrant church that teaches the Bible and encourages your family in their walk with the Lord.
  7. Provide Emotional Support: Show genuine care and emotional support to your family members. Be attentive to their emotional needs, offering comfort, encouragement, and understanding. Foster an atmosphere of love, trust, and acceptance within your home.
  8. Set Clear Boundaries and Disciplines: Establish clear boundaries and guidelines within your home, ensuring that they align with biblical principles. Discipline your children with love and consistency, providing correction when needed, and teaching them about the consequences of their actions. Discipline should always be carried out with the aim of nurturing their character and helping them grow.
  9. Foster Unity: Strive to create a united and harmonious atmosphere within your home. Encourage teamwork, collaboration, and mutual respect among family members. Address conflicts and disagreements promptly, seeking resolution and reconciliation.
  10. Seek Support and Accountability: Recognize that leading a home is a challenging responsibility. Seek support and accountability from your church community, mentors, or trusted Christian friends. Engage in discussions, seek advice, and learn from the experiences of others.

Learning Musical Notation

Learning to read musical notation, including notes, can be an enriching and rewarding experience. Here are some steps you can follow to learn how to read musical notation effectively:

  1. Start with the basics: Familiarize yourself with the staff, which consists of five horizontal lines and four spaces. Notes are placed on these lines and spaces to represent different pitches.
  2. Learn the names of the lines and spaces: From bottom to top, the lines of the staff (treble clef) are named E, G, B, D, and F. The spaces spell out the word F-A-C-E.
  3. Understand note duration: Notes can have different durations, represented by their shapes. The whole note (an unfilled oval) is held for four beats, while half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, and so on, have shorter durations.
  4. Memorize the note names: Each note on the staff corresponds to a letter. Starting from the bottom line and moving up, the notes on the lines are E, G, B, D, and F (which can be remembered using the mnemonic “Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge”). The notes in the spaces are F, A, C, and E (which can be remembered as “FACE”).
  5. Practice identifying notes: Use exercises and musical examples to practice identifying notes on the staff. Start with simple melodies and gradually progress to more complex pieces.
  6. Understand key signatures: Key signatures indicate the sharps or flats that are consistently used throughout a piece of music. Learning to recognize key signatures will help you identify the notes correctly and understand the tonality of the music.
  7. Study rhythm notation: In addition to notes, understanding rhythm notation is essential. Learn about different types of note values, rests, and time signatures, which indicate the number of beats in a measure.
  8. Use flashcards and apps: Flashcards can be a useful tool for memorizing note names. Additionally, there are numerous apps and online resources available that provide interactive exercises and games to help you practice reading notes.
  9. Practice sight-reading: Sight-reading is the ability to read and play or sing music at first sight. Regularly practice sight-reading exercises to improve your reading skills and develop fluency.
  10. Seek guidance from a teacher: Consider taking lessons or working with a music teacher who can guide you through the process, provide feedback, and address any specific challenges you may encounter.

Learning To Improvise From Chord Charts

Learning to improvise off of chord charts, such as those found in the Real Book or Fake Book, is a skill that many musicians develop through practice and experience. Here are some steps and strategies that can help musicians learn to improvise effectively:

  1. Master your instrument: Before diving into improvisation, it’s crucial to have a solid foundation on your instrument. Develop a good understanding of scales, arpeggios, chord voicings, and technical proficiency.
  2. Learn music theory: A strong knowledge of music theory is essential for improvisation. Understand the relationship between chords, scales, and harmonies. Study the different chord progressions commonly found in jazz and popular music, such as ii-V-I progressions, blues progressions, and modal progressions.
  3. Study recordings and transcriptions: Listen to recordings of experienced improvisers and study their solos. Transcribe and analyze their improvisations to understand their melodic ideas, phrasing, and use of scales and arpeggios. This process will help you internalize the language of improvisation and develop your own musical vocabulary.
  4. Start with simple tunes: Begin by improvising on simple tunes with straightforward chord progressions. The Real Book or Fake Book can be excellent resources for this. Practice improvising over these progressions, experimenting with different scales and melodic ideas that fit the chords.
  5. Understand chord/scale relationships: Each chord in a progression can be associated with certain scales or modes that work well over it. Learn the appropriate scales for different chord types (major, minor, dominant, etc.) and practice connecting them smoothly as the chords change.
  6. Develop rhythmic and melodic ideas: Explore different rhythmic patterns and phrasing techniques to add variety and interest to your improvisation. Experiment with various note choices, including chromatic passing tones, approaches, and enclosures, to create melodic lines that connect with the chord progression.
  7. Use guide tones and target notes: Guide tones are the essential chord tones (typically the 3rd and 7th) that define the harmonic structure. Focusing on guide tones can help you outline the chord progression and create strong melodic lines. Target notes are specific chord tones or tensions that you aim to emphasize when transitioning between chords.
  8. Practice with backing tracks or a rhythm section: Improvising with a backing track or playing with a live rhythm section can simulate a real performance environment. This allows you to develop your improvisational skills in context and helps you improve your sense of time, interaction, and musicality.
  9. Play with others: Collaborating with other musicians is an invaluable experience for learning to improvise. Jam sessions and playing in ensembles provide opportunities to interact, respond to other musicians’ ideas, and explore different musical styles.
  10. Be patient and persistent: Improvisation is a skill that takes time to develop. Be patient with yourself and embrace the learning process. Practice regularly, challenge yourself with new tunes and progressions, and continually seek feedback and inspiration from experienced improvisers.

Remember, improvisation is about expressing yourself and developing your unique musical voice. As you gain more experience, continue exploring different styles, techniques, and approaches to expand your improvisational abilities.

The Nashville Numbering System

Learning the Nashville Numbering System (NNS) can be a valuable skill for musicians, particularly in the context of country, rock, gospel and pop music. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you learn and understand the NNS:

  1. Understand the purpose: The NNS is a shorthand system used to represent chord progressions and relationships in a song. It allows musicians to communicate and transpose songs quickly and efficiently, especially in a collaborative setting.
  2. Familiarize yourself with the scale degrees: In the NNS, each degree of the major scale is assigned a number from 1 to 7. The numbers represent the scale degrees, with 1 being the tonic or root note.
  3. Determine the key of the song: Identify the key of the song you’re working on. This will serve as your reference point for assigning numbers to the chords.
  4. Assign numbers to the chords: Analyze the chords of the song and assign numbers based on their relationship to the key. For example, if the song is in the key of C major and the first chord is C major, you would label it as 1. If the second chord is D minor, it would be labeled as 2. Continue this process for each chord in the song.
  5. Memorize common chord progressions: Learn the most common chord progressions used in the Nashville Numbering System, such as 1-4-5 (the classic I-IV-V progression), 1-6-4-5 (common in many pop songs), and so on. Practice playing these progressions in different keys to reinforce your understanding.
  6. Practice transposing: One of the main benefits of the NNS is its ability to easily transpose songs to different keys. Take a song you’re familiar with and try transposing it to a different key using the NNS. Start with simpler progressions and gradually tackle more complex ones.
  7. Apply the NNS in real-life scenarios: As you become more comfortable with the system, apply it in practical situations. Use it when collaborating with other musicians, communicating chord progressions, or when reading lead sheets written in the NNS format.
  8. Seek resources and practice regularly: There are many online resources, tutorials, and chord charts available that specifically focus on the Nashville Numbering System. Seek out these materials and practice regularly to solidify your understanding and fluency.

Remember, learning the Nashville Numbering System requires practice and familiarity. The more you work with it, the more comfortable you’ll become in using it as a versatile tool for understanding and communicating chord progressions in popular music.
