“David found strength in the Lord his God.”
— 1 Samuel 30:6
Everyone faces difficult times.

Some seasons are filled with joy, momentum, and blessing. Other seasons feel heavy and exhausting. Life can suddenly become complicated through loss, disappointment, financial stress, family struggles, health concerns, ministry pressures, or emotional discouragement.
Even strong people sometimes feel weak.
David understood this well.
When we read the story in 1 Samuel 30, David was facing one of the darkest moments of his life. The Amalekites had attacked Ziklag, burned the city, and taken the women and children captive. David’s own men were devastated and angry enough to speak of stoning him.
Everything seemed to be falling apart.
And then Scripture gives us this remarkable statement:
“But David found strength in the Lord his God.”
David discovered something many believers still need to learn today: real strength is found in God.
Difficult Times Reveal Where We Look for Strength
When life becomes difficult, people often search for strength in temporary things:
- money
- success
- entertainment
- relationships
- distractions
- addictions
- food
- human approval
But none of those things can truly sustain the soul.
Eventually, every person discovers that human strength has limits.
Isaiah 40:30 says:
“Even youths will become weak and tired, and young men will fall in exhaustion.”
No matter how strong, talented, or successful someone is, everyone eventually reaches moments where they desperately need God.
1. Turn to God Instead of Away From Him
One of the greatest mistakes people make during difficult seasons is drifting away from God.
Pain sometimes causes people to stop praying, stop worshipping, and stop reading Scripture. Yet those are the very things they need most.
David did not run from God in crisis—he ran toward Him.
Psalm 46:1 says:
“God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.”
God is not distant during your struggles. He is near.
Bring Him your fears.
Bring Him your frustrations.
Bring Him your questions.
Bring Him your weakness.
God can handle honest prayer.
2. Strength Comes Through God’s Word
The Bible strengthens the heart and renews the mind.
When discouragement fills your thoughts, God’s Word brings perspective and hope.
David often reminded himself of God’s faithfulness through worship and Scripture. The Psalms are full of declarations like:
- “The Lord is my shepherd.”
- “The Lord is my light and my salvation.”
- “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart.”
Many believers try to survive difficult seasons while spiritually starving themselves.
Feed your soul daily.
Read Scripture slowly.
Meditate on God’s promises.
Write verses down.
Pray through the Psalms.
God’s truth brings strength to weary people.
3. Learn the Power of Worship
Worship is not only for good days.
Some of the deepest worship rises from difficult seasons.
David worshipped in caves.
Paul and Silas sang in prison.
Job worshipped after devastating loss.
Worship changes our focus. It lifts our eyes from our problems to the greatness of God.
There are moments when your soul becomes stronger simply by declaring:
- God is faithful
- God is good
- God is still in control
- God has not abandoned me
Worship brings spiritual strength because it reconnects us with God’s presence.
4. Remember What God Has Already Done
David repeatedly remembered God’s past faithfulness.
Before facing Goliath, he remembered the lion and the bear. He looked back at previous victories and realized God had never failed him.
Difficult seasons often cause spiritual amnesia. We forget:
- prayers God answered
- doors He opened
- protection He gave
- miracles He performed
- strength He already provided
Sometimes faith grows stronger by remembering.
Take time to reflect on how God has carried you through previous seasons. The God who helped you before will help you again.
5. Wait on the Lord
Isaiah 40:31 says:
“But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength.”
Waiting on God does not mean doing nothing. It means remaining close to Him with trust and expectation.
Strength is renewed in God’s presence.
Our culture constantly pushes speed, noise, and distraction. But many of the strongest believers develop strength quietly through:
- prayer
- worship
- solitude
- Scripture meditation
- faithful obedience
God often builds deep strength slowly.
6. Don’t Walk Through Difficult Times Alone
God never intended believers to carry every burden alone.
During hard seasons, isolation can become dangerous. Discouragement grows stronger when we withdraw from healthy relationships.
Sometimes God strengthens us through:
- a spouse
- a pastor
- Christian friends
- worship gatherings
- encouraging conversations
- prayer from others
Galatians says:
“Share each other’s burdens.”
Strong people are not people who never need help. Strong people are willing to lean on God and others when necessary.
7. God’s Strength Is Greatest in Weakness
Paul prayed for God to remove his weakness, but God responded:
“My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.”
This is one of the great mysteries of the Christian life: sometimes God allows weakness so we learn dependence on Him.
Pride says:
“I can handle this myself.”
Faith says:
“Lord, I need You.”
God specializes in strengthening weak and weary people.
Final Thoughts
Difficult times are never easy. But they can become places where we encounter God more deeply than ever before.
David lost much at Ziklag, but he discovered fresh strength in God.
You may be walking through a difficult season right now:
- emotionally
- physically
- financially
- spiritually
- relationally
Do not lose heart.
God still strengthens His people.
Run to Him daily.
Spend time in His presence.
Fill your mind with His Word.
Worship even before the breakthrough comes.
Trust Him one day at a time.
And like David, you will discover that even in the hardest moments of life, God can give strength for the journey ahead.
