Seek the Lord: What Does It Really Mean?

“Seek the Lord” is a phrase we hear often in Christian circles. We find it throughout Scripture, but what does it actually mean to seek God?

It means more than simply asking God for help. To seek the Lord is to actively pursue Him—to desire His presence, listen for His voice, follow His ways, and make knowing Him a priority in our lives.

The Bible says:

“Seek the Lord while you can find Him. Call on Him now while He is near.”
— Isaiah 55:6

Seeking God begins with a heart that genuinely wants Him.

Seeking God Is More Than Seeking His Blessings

It is easy to seek God when we need something.

We may pray when we are sick, ask for guidance when we face a difficult decision, or cry out to Him when life becomes overwhelming. God invites us to bring these things to Him, but seeking the Lord is much deeper than asking Him to solve our problems.

We don’t simply seek what God can give us—we seek God Himself.

The psalmist wrote:

“My heart has heard you say, ‘Come and talk with Me.’ And my heart responds, ‘Lord, I am coming.’”
— Psalm 27:8

There is something beautiful about that invitation. God is not merely calling us to receive something from Him. He is calling us into relationship with Him.

Seeking the Lord Means Making Him a Priority

We seek whatever we consider important.

If we want to become good at music, we practice. If we want to become physically healthy, we make changes to our daily routines. If we want to develop a meaningful relationship with someone, we spend time with them.

The same principle applies to our relationship with God.

If we want to know the Lord more deeply, we need to make room for Him.

That means opening His Word, praying, worshiping, listening, obeying, and deliberately turning our hearts toward Him throughout the day.

Jesus said:

“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.”
— Matthew 6:33

Notice the words “above all else.”

Seeking God means that He isn’t simply one part of our lives. He becomes the foundation around which our lives are built.

Seeking the Lord Means Wanting His Will

Sometimes we say, “God, please show me what You want me to do,” when what we really mean is, “God, please bless what I have already decided to do.”

Seeking the Lord requires a different attitude.

It says, “Lord, I want Your will more than my own.”

That can be difficult. God’s direction may not always be the direction we would choose. His timing may not be our timing. His answer may sometimes be “wait,” “no,” or “trust Me.”

But seeking God means that we trust Him enough to follow even when we don’t understand everything.

Proverbs 3:5–6 gives us this wonderful promise:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart;
do not depend on your own understanding.
Seek His will in all you do,
and He will show you which path to take.”

Seeking God Requires a Willing Heart

We don’t have to be perfect before we seek the Lord.

In fact, seeking Him is one of the ways God changes us.

We come to Him with our weaknesses, our questions, our failures, our fears, and our hopes. We don’t need to pretend to be someone we’re not.

David prayed:

“Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.”
— Psalm 139:23

That is the heart of someone who is seeking God: “Lord, show me who I really am, and show me who You want me to become.”

Seeking the Lord Is a Daily Choice

Seeking God isn’t something we do once and then check off our spiritual list.

It is a daily pursuit.

There will be days when we feel close to God and days when He seems distant. There will be seasons when prayer feels easy and seasons when it feels like work.

But seeking the Lord means continuing to turn toward Him.

Every morning we can say, “Lord, I want You to be at the center of my life today.”

We can seek Him in Scripture.

We can seek Him in prayer.

We can seek Him in worship.

We can seek Him when making decisions.

We can seek Him when dealing with difficult people.

We can seek Him when we don’t know what to do.

And we can seek Him simply because we love Him.

There Is a Promise for Those Who Seek Him

God does not play hide-and-seek with those who sincerely desire Him.

Jeremiah 29:13 says:

“If you look for Me wholeheartedly, you will find Me.”

What an incredible promise!

God wants to be found.

When we sincerely seek Him, we discover that He is not merely interested in changing our circumstances. He wants to change us. He wants to deepen our faith, shape our character, teach us to trust Him, and draw us into a closer relationship with Himself.

Ultimately, seeking the Lord is about this simple desire:

“Lord, I want to know You. I want to hear You. I want to follow You. I want Your will to be done in my life.”

That is what it means to seek the Lord.

And when we make seeking Him the pursuit of our lives, we discover something wonderful:

The greatest treasure isn’t what we find from God. The greatest treasure is finding God Himself.
