“He was deeply committed to the ways of the Lord.” — 2 Chronicles 17:6
There are many things in life that can capture our commitment. We can be committed to our families, our careers, our health, our goals, our hobbies, and the things we enjoy.
But there is no greater commitment than being deeply committed to God.
As I was reading 2 Chronicles 17, these words about King Jehoshaphat caught my attention:
“He was deeply committed to the ways of the Lord.”
What a wonderful description of a person’s life!
Imagine having those words written about you. Imagine someone looking at your life and saying, “He was deeply committed to the ways of the Lord.”
That is the kind of life I want to live.
What Does It Mean To Be Deeply Committed?
Being deeply committed to God means more than simply believing in Him.
It means allowing God to shape the way we live.
It affects our decisions, our priorities, our relationships, our attitudes, our words, and even the things we do when nobody else is watching.
A deeply committed heart says:
“Lord, I don’t just want to know Your ways. I want to live according to Your ways.”
It means choosing God’s wisdom over our own wisdom.
It means trusting His Word even when we don’t completely understand it.
It means obeying Him even when obedience is difficult.
And when we fail—and we all do—we don’t walk away from God. We turn back to Him, receive His forgiveness, and continue following Him.
Deep commitment doesn’t mean perfection.
It means direction.
Our hearts are continually pointed toward God.
There Is Blessing In Following God’s Ways
The Bible repeatedly shows us that God’s ways are good.
Psalm 1 describes the person who delights in the law of the Lord and meditates on it day and night. That person is compared to a tree planted beside streams of water—a tree that is healthy, fruitful, and flourishing.
There is something powerful about building our lives on God’s truth.
When we follow God’s ways, we experience the blessing of His wisdom.
We experience the blessing of knowing that our lives have purpose.
We experience the blessing of a clear conscience.
We experience the blessing of God’s presence.
And we experience the joy that comes from knowing that we are walking in the direction God has called us to walk.
This doesn’t mean that a committed Christian will never experience hardship. Jehoshaphat himself faced enemies, difficulties, and moments of fear.
The blessing isn’t a trouble-free life.
The blessing is knowing that God is with us in the middle of whatever life brings.
Deep Commitment Requires Choices
Jehoshaphat’s commitment to God affected the choices he made as king.
2 Chronicles 17 tells us that he removed idols from Judah and directed the people back toward the Lord. He understood that following God sometimes means removing things that compete with our devotion to Him.
That principle still applies to us today.
Sometimes being deeply committed to God means saying no to something.
No to an attitude that is pulling us away from God.
No to a relationship that is damaging our walk with Him.
No to habits that are controlling us.
No to entertainment or influences that are shaping our hearts in the wrong direction.
And sometimes it means saying yes.
Yes to forgiveness.
Yes to generosity.
Yes to serving.
Yes to prayer.
Yes to God’s Word.
Yes to loving people who are difficult to love.
Yes to whatever God is asking us to do.
Every choice we make is helping to shape the kind of person we are becoming.
A Deeply Committed Life Influences Others
One of the most encouraging things about Jehoshaphat’s story is that his commitment to God didn’t affect only him.
His leadership influenced an entire nation.
When a leader takes God seriously, other people notice.
The same is true in our families, churches, workplaces, and communities.
Your children notice.
Your grandchildren notice.
Your friends notice.
The people you work with notice.
They may not always say anything, but our lives are constantly communicating something about what we value.
When people see someone who genuinely loves God, trusts Him, forgives others, serves faithfully, and lives according to God’s Word, it becomes a powerful testimony.
A deeply committed life can leave a deeply lasting influence.
What Will People Remember About You?
One day, people will remember many things about our lives.
They may remember our accomplishments.
They may remember our careers.
They may remember the places we travelled and the things we owned.
But what if one of the greatest things they remembered was this:
“He loved God.”
“She trusted God.”
“He lived according to God’s ways.”
“She was deeply committed to the Lord.”
That would be a life well lived.
Our greatest legacy isn’t what we accumulate.
It’s what we leave behind in the hearts and lives of other people.
A Question For All Of Us
So let me ask you a simple but important question:
Are you deeply committed to God?
Not just committed when things are going well.
Not just committed on Sunday.
Not just committed when you need something from Him.
But deeply committed.
Committed in the good times.
Committed in the difficult times.
Committed when you understand.
Committed when you don’t understand.
Committed when obedience is easy.
Committed when obedience costs you something.
God is worthy of that kind of devotion.
And the wonderful thing is that when we give ourselves completely to God, we discover that we have not lost anything of lasting value.
We have gained the greatest treasure of all—a life lived in fellowship with God.
So let’s make this our desire:
“Lord, I want my life to be deeply committed to You. I want Your ways to become my ways. I want my decisions to honour You, my words to reflect You, and my life to point others toward You.”
May we live so faithfully that when others look at our lives, they can say:
“He was deeply committed to the ways of the Lord.”
And may that commitment become one of the greatest blessings of our lives.
A Prayer
Lord, help me to be deeply committed to You and Your ways. Give me a heart that loves Your Word, seeks Your presence, and desires to obey You. Help me to remove anything from my life that is keeping me from wholehearted devotion to You. Give me strength when following You is difficult and humility when I fail. May my life be a blessing to others and may those who know me see something of Your love and goodness through me. I want to live a life that honours You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
