Life has a way of surprising us. Some surprises bring joy—a new grandchild, a long-awaited answer to prayer, a beautiful sunset, or an unexpected blessing. Others bring heartache—a difficult diagnosis, financial pressure, broken relationships, unanswered questions, or the loss of someone we love.
In moments like these, it’s easy to wonder, “Is anyone really in control?”
The Bible gives us a clear and comforting answer: God is in control.
God’s Rule Never Changes
The circumstances around us may change daily, but God’s throne never moves.
“The Lord has established His throne in heaven, and His kingdom rules over all.” (Psalm 103:19)
God is never surprised by today’s headlines. He isn’t pacing heaven wondering what will happen next. He knows the beginning from the end. Every event, every nation, every season of our lives is under His sovereign authority.
That doesn’t mean everything that happens is good. We live in a fallen world where sin has brought pain, suffering, and death. But even in the middle of brokenness, God remains King. Nothing can overturn His purposes.
Jesus Is Lord Over Every Storm
One of my favorite stories is found in the Gospels when Jesus calmed the raging sea.
The disciples were terrified. Experienced fishermen believed they were about to die. Yet Jesus simply spoke, “Peace! Be still!” and immediately the wind and waves obeyed Him.
The disciples asked one another,
“Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?” (Mark 4:41)
The same Jesus who ruled the storm then still rules today.
Your storm may not be on the Sea of Galilee. It may be a health challenge, a strained marriage, financial uncertainty, anxiety about the future, or grief over a loved one. Whatever storm you’re facing, Jesus remains Lord over it.
God Sees What We Cannot
We often judge life by what we can see today.
God sees the entire picture.
Like a master weaver, He is creating something beautiful from threads that seem tangled to us. We may only see confusion, but God sees the finished masterpiece.
Isaiah reminds us:
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. (Isaiah 55:8)
There are times when we simply won’t understand why certain things happen. Yet faith trusts the character of God even when His plans remain hidden.
Trust Is Stronger Than Fear
Fear grows when we focus on what might happen.
Faith grows when we focus on who God is.
David declared:
“When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.” (Psalm 56:3)
Notice he didn’t say he never felt afraid. He chose to trust God in the middle of his fear.
Trust doesn’t eliminate every question, but it gives us confidence that God is walking with us through every valley.
God’s Love Never Fails
God’s control is not cold or distant. He rules with perfect love.
Jesus said that not even a sparrow falls to the ground apart from the Father’s care. Then He reminded His followers that they are worth far more than many sparrows (Matthew 10:29–31).
Think about that.
The Creator of the universe knows your name.
He knows every tear you’ve cried.
He knows every burden you’ve carried.
He knows every prayer you’ve whispered.
If He cares for the birds of the air, how much more does He care for His children?
Our Response
If God truly is in control, then our response should be simple:
- Pray instead of panic.
- Trust instead of worry.
- Worship instead of complain.
- Obey instead of resist.
- Hope instead of despair.
These choices don’t come naturally. They come as we fix our eyes on God’s faithfulness instead of our circumstances.
When Life Doesn’t Make Sense
Perhaps you’re reading this while facing one of the hardest seasons of your life.
Maybe you’ve prayed and nothing seems to have changed.
Remember that God’s delays are not God’s absence.
His silence is not abandonment.
His timing is always perfect, even when it doesn’t match ours.
One day we’ll understand what today we simply have to trust.
A Final Thought
The world may feel uncertain, but our God is not.
Governments change.
Economies rise and fall.
Health comes and goes.
People disappoint us.
But God remains faithful.
He is still on the throne.
He is still working.
He is still loving.
He is still leading.
And because God is in control, we can face tomorrow with peace instead of fear.
Whatever you’re facing today, place it into His hands. The One who created the universe is more than able to carry you through every challenge.
God is in control—and that is enough.
