“Honor the Lord for the glory of His name. Worship the Lord in the splendor of His holiness.” — Psalm 29:2
There are many reasons people gather for worship each week. Some come seeking encouragement. Others come looking for hope, comfort, or direction. While God graciously meets those needs, Psalm 29 reminds us of something even greater: worship is first and foremost about God.
David writes:
“Honor the Lord for the glory of His name. Worship the Lord in the splendor of His holiness.” (Psalm 29:2)
This simple verse calls us to lift our eyes off ourselves and fix them on the One who is worthy of all praise.
Honor the Lord
To honor someone is to recognize their value and give them the respect they deserve. When we honor God, we acknowledge that He is infinitely greater than anyone or anything else.
God doesn’t need our praise to become more glorious—He is already glorious. Our worship simply recognizes what has always been true. Every song we sing, every prayer we pray, and every act of obedience declares that God alone deserves first place in our lives.
Honor begins in the heart. Before it is expressed with our voices, it is cultivated by humility, gratitude, and reverence.
The Glory of His Name
In the Bible, a person’s name represents their character and reputation. God’s name reflects everything He is.
He is:
- Holy
- Loving
- Faithful
- Just
- Merciful
- Powerful
- Unchanging
- Compassionate
When we honor the glory of His name, we celebrate His perfect character. We worship Him not merely for what He has done, but for who He is.
His love never fails.
His mercy never runs out.
His promises never change.
That alone is reason enough to worship.
Worship in the Splendor of His Holiness
What a beautiful phrase: “the splendor of His holiness.”
Holiness is not merely one of God’s attributes—it defines every attribute He possesses. His love is holy love. His justice is holy justice. His mercy is holy mercy.
God’s holiness means He is completely set apart from all creation. He is morally perfect, utterly pure, and absolutely righteous.
Yet His holiness is not cold or distant. It is beautiful.
Throughout Scripture, whenever people caught even a glimpse of God’s holiness, they responded with awe.
Isaiah cried, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty.”
John fell at Jesus’ feet as though dead.
The angels continually declare His holiness around His throne.
God’s holiness inspires wonder because there is no one like Him.
Worship Is More Than Singing
While music is a wonderful expression of worship, biblical worship includes our entire lives.
Romans 12:1 urges believers to offer themselves as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God. That means we worship God when we:
- Choose obedience over compromise.
- Forgive instead of holding bitterness.
- Serve others with humility.
- Speak words that build people up.
- Live lives that reflect Christ.
Sunday worship should overflow into Monday living.
Preparing Our Hearts
Psalm 29 invites us to come before God with reverence.
Before we sing, we should pause and remember who He is.
Before we ask Him for anything, we should thank Him.
Before we focus on our needs, we should focus on His greatness.
When our hearts are filled with the majesty of God, our worship becomes richer, deeper, and more authentic.
The Blessing of God-Centered Worship
Something remarkable happens when we stop making worship about ourselves.
Our fears become smaller because God becomes bigger.
Our worries lose their grip because we remember who is in control.
Our gratitude increases because we see His goodness everywhere.
The more we behold God’s glory, the more we are transformed into His likeness.
True worship doesn’t simply change the atmosphere around us—it changes us.
A Challenge for Today
The next time you gather for worship, come with a different perspective.
Instead of asking, “What will I get out of this service?” ask:
“How can I bring honor to the Lord today?”
Sing with gratitude.
Pray with sincerity.
Listen with an open heart.
Live in obedience.
Give Him the glory His name deserves.
Because there is no one like our God.
He alone is worthy.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, You alone deserve all honor, glory, and praise. Thank You for revealing Your greatness, Your love, and Your holiness to us. Help us to worship You not only with our songs but also with our lives. May everything we do bring glory to Your name. Teach us to stand in awe of Your holiness and to live each day with grateful hearts that reflect Your goodness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
