“This is what God says: Why do you disobey the Lord’s commands and keep yourselves from prospering? You have abandoned the Lord, and now He has abandoned you!”
Disobedience always has a cost.
Sometimes we are tempted to think that God’s commands are restrictive—that He is trying to keep us from enjoying life or doing what we really want to do. But throughout Scripture, we see a very different picture. God’s commands are not designed to rob us of life. They are given to lead us into the life He desires for us.
The words above were spoken by the prophet Azariah to King Asa and the people of Judah. They had experienced God’s blessing and victory, but they needed to understand an important truth: continued blessing requires continued faithfulness.
God asked them a penetrating question:
“Why do you disobey the Lord’s commands and keep yourselves from prospering?”
Think about that phrase: keep yourselves from prospering.
Sometimes we blame God for what we are experiencing. We wonder why things are not going well. We ask God to bless us, guide us, and help us. Yet at the same time, we may be knowingly walking in disobedience.
We cannot expect to continually ignore God’s ways and still enjoy the full benefits of walking closely with Him.
Disobedience Takes Us Away from God
The verse continues:
“You have abandoned the Lord, and now He has abandoned you!”
These are sobering words.
God had not suddenly changed. He had not become unfaithful. The people had moved away from Him first. They had abandoned His ways, ignored His commands, and turned their hearts elsewhere.
There is always a cost when we choose our own way over God’s way.
Disobedience can rob us of peace. It can damage relationships. It can weaken our spiritual lives. It can lead us into unnecessary pain and regret. Most importantly, persistent disobedience can cause us to drift from the One who loves us most.
Sin promises freedom, but it often leads to bondage.
God’s ways may not always be easy, but they lead us toward life, peace, wisdom, and blessing.
Obedience Is a Matter of the Heart
Obedience is more than simply following a list of rules. At its deepest level, obedience is an expression of love.
Jesus said:
“If you love Me, obey My commandments.”
When we truly love God, we want to please Him. We begin to see His commands not as burdens, but as the loving guidance of a Father who sees what we cannot see.
Of course, none of us obey perfectly. We all fail. We all have moments when we choose our own way instead of God’s way.
But when we fall, the answer is not to run away from God.
The answer is to return to Him.
The good news of the gospel is that God is merciful. He is ready to forgive, restore, and receive those who turn back to Him with sincere hearts.
What Is God Asking You to Obey?
Perhaps the most important question is this:
Is there an area of my life where I know what God wants me to do, but I am choosing not to do it?
Maybe it involves forgiveness.
Maybe it involves a relationship.
Maybe God is asking you to let go of a habit or attitude that is pulling you away from Him.
Perhaps He has spoken to you about something you need to begin doing—or something you need to stop doing.
We often ask God to show us His will, but sometimes He is simply waiting for us to obey what He has already made clear.
Partial obedience is still disobedience.
Delayed obedience can also become disobedience.
The safest and most fulfilling place in life is to walk closely with God and follow His ways.
The Choice Is Ours
God’s warning to Judah was serious, but it was also an invitation.
Return to Me.
Seek Me.
Follow My ways.
Trust Me enough to obey Me.
The cost of disobedience is always greater than we imagine. But the blessing of obedience is also greater than we often realize.
God does not call us to obedience because He wants to make our lives smaller. He calls us to obedience because He loves us and knows the path that leads to true life.
Today, don’t ignore the voice of the Lord.
If He is speaking to your heart about something, respond.
Don’t put it off.
Don’t rationalize it.
Don’t wait for a more convenient time.
Choose obedience today.
You may discover that what felt like giving something up was actually God leading you into something far better.
Because obedience may cost us something in the moment—but disobedience can cost us far more.
And there is no better place to live than in the center of God’s will.
