Who Is Jesus? What’s In A Name?

“There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.” — Acts 4:12

Names matter.

Throughout the Bible, names often reveal a person’s character, purpose, or destiny. Abraham means “father of many nations.” Isaac means “laughter.” Peter means “rock.”

When it comes to Jesus, the Bible gives Him dozens of names and titles. Each one reveals another facet of His nature and mission. Like a diamond with many sparkling sides, every name helps us understand more about who He is.

Let’s explore some of the remarkable names given to the Messiah.

Jesus — The Savior

The name Jesus comes from the Hebrew name Joshua, meaning “The Lord saves.”

Before Jesus was born, an angel appeared to Joseph and said:

“You are to name Him Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21)

His primary mission was clear from the beginning: He came to rescue humanity from sin and restore us to God.

Christ — The Anointed One

“Christ” is not Jesus’ last name. It is a title.

Christ comes from the Greek word meaning “Anointed One,” the equivalent of the Hebrew word “Messiah.”

For centuries, Israel awaited the promised Messiah who would deliver God’s people. Jesus fulfilled hundreds of Old Testament prophecies and proved Himself to be the long-awaited Christ.

When we say “Jesus Christ,” we are declaring that Jesus is the promised Messiah.

Immanuel — God With Us

One of the most beautiful names given to Jesus is Immanuel.

“They shall call Him Immanuel, which means ‘God with us.'” (Matthew 1:23)

Jesus is not merely a great teacher, prophet, or moral example. He is God who came to dwell among us.

Through Jesus, God stepped into our world, experienced our struggles, and made a way for us to know Him personally.

Son of God

This title appears repeatedly throughout the New Testament.

It does not mean Jesus was created by God. Rather, it points to His divine nature and His unique relationship with the Father.

When Jesus claimed to be the Son of God, His listeners understood exactly what He meant—that He was equal with God.

Jesus is fully God and fully man.

Son of Man

Interestingly, Jesus referred to Himself as the Son of Man more than any other title.

This title emphasizes His humanity, but it also points to the prophetic vision in Daniel 7 where the Son of Man receives everlasting authority and dominion.

Jesus understands our weaknesses because He lived among us. Yet He also possesses all authority in heaven and on earth.

Lamb of God

When John the Baptist first saw Jesus, he declared:

“Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29)

In the Old Testament, lambs were sacrificed as offerings for sin. These sacrifices pointed forward to the ultimate sacrifice Jesus would make on the cross.

Jesus became the perfect Lamb who gave His life so we could be forgiven and reconciled to God.

The Good Shepherd

Jesus said:

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices His life for the sheep.” (John 10:11)

A shepherd protects, guides, feeds, and cares for the flock.

Jesus watches over His people with love, patience, and unwavering commitment. He knows each of us by name and leads us beside still waters.

The Bread of Life

Jesus declared:

“I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never be hungry again.” (John 6:35)

Physical food sustains the body. Jesus sustains the soul.

People spend their lives searching for satisfaction, purpose, and meaning. Only Christ can truly satisfy the deepest hunger of the human heart.

The Light of the World

Jesus said:

“I am the light of the world. If you follow Me, you won’t have to walk in darkness.” (John 8:12)

Light reveals truth and guides our path.

In a culture filled with confusion, uncertainty, and spiritual darkness, Jesus shines brightly and shows us the way to God.

The Way, The Truth, and The Life

Perhaps one of Jesus’ most profound statements was:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6)

Jesus doesn’t merely show the way—He is the way.

He doesn’t simply teach truth—He is truth.

He doesn’t merely offer life—He is life itself.

King of Kings and Lord of Lords

The Bible describes Jesus as:

“King of kings and Lord of lords.” (Revelation 19:16)

Every ruler, kingdom, government, and authority ultimately answers to Him.

One day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

His kingdom will never end.

Alpha and Omega

Jesus declares:

“I am the Alpha and the Omega—the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” (Revelation 22:13)

Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet.

Jesus stands at the beginning of creation and at the culmination of history. He is eternal, sovereign, and unchanging.

The Resurrection and the Life

Standing before the tomb of Lazarus, Jesus made an astonishing claim:

“I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in Me will live, even after dying.” (John 11:25)

Because Jesus conquered death, those who trust in Him have the assurance of eternal life.

Death is not the end of the story.

What Is In A Name?

The names of Jesus reveal who He is:

  • Savior
  • Messiah
  • God With Us
  • Son of God
  • Son of Man
  • Lamb of God
  • Good Shepherd
  • Bread of Life
  • Light of the World
  • King of Kings
  • Alpha and Omega
  • Resurrection and Life

Each title tells us something important about His character, His mission, and His love for humanity.

Yet no list of names can fully capture His greatness.

The Apostle John concluded his Gospel by saying that if everything Jesus did were written down, the world itself could not contain all the books that would be written.

Jesus is more than a historical figure. More than a prophet. More than a teacher.

He is the Savior of the world, the Son of God, and the King who invites us into a relationship with Him.

And perhaps the most important question is not, “What are His names?”

The most important question is:

Who is Jesus to you?
