“You don’t have what you want because you don’t ask God for it.” — James 4:2
There is something remarkably simple about this verse, yet it contains a profound spiritual truth: sometimes we lack what we need simply because we have never asked God for it.
We can spend hours worrying, planning, striving, trying to solve problems on our own—and then wonder why we feel overwhelmed. God invites us to bring our needs, desires, dreams, and concerns directly to Him.
God Wants Us to Ask
Jesus repeatedly encouraged His followers to ask.
“Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find.” — Matthew 7:7
Prayer is not merely a religious exercise. Prayer is an invitation to bring our lives into conversation with our Heavenly Father.
God already knows what we need. He knows our circumstances, our struggles, and even the desires of our hearts. Yet He still tells us to ask.
Why?
Because asking builds relationship and dependence.
When we ask God for something, we are acknowledging that we need Him. We are saying, “Lord, I cannot do this by myself. I need Your wisdom. I need Your provision. I need Your strength.”
But Asking Isn’t Demanding
James is not teaching us that God is a cosmic vending machine where we simply put in our requests and receive whatever we want.
The very next verses warn about asking with wrong motives. God cares not only about what we ask for but also why we ask.
Our prayers should increasingly reflect God’s heart.
Sometimes we ask for something because we genuinely need it. Sometimes we ask because we want to bless someone else. And sometimes we ask because we simply want something for ourselves.
God welcomes us to bring all of these things to Him—but He also wants to transform our desires.
As we walk with Him, our prayer changes from:
“God, give me what I want.”
to:
“God, help me want what You want.”
That is a powerful difference.
Don’t Be Afraid to Ask
Perhaps one reason we don’t ask God is that we don’t think our request is important enough.
We may think, “God has much bigger problems to deal with. Why would He be concerned about my little situation?”
But Scripture tells us that God cares about the details of our lives.
Peter wrote:
“Give all your worries and cares to God, for He cares about you.” — 1 Peter 5:7
If it matters to you, you can bring it to God.
Ask Him for wisdom.
Ask Him for provision.
Ask Him for direction.
Ask Him for strength.
Ask Him to help your marriage.
Ask Him to help your family.
Ask Him to open the right doors and close the wrong ones.
Ask Him to give you opportunities to serve Him.
Ask Him to help you become more like Jesus.
Don’t assume you have to carry everything yourself.
Sometimes the Answer Is No
There is another important truth about prayer: God doesn’t always give us what we ask for.
Sometimes the answer is yes.
Sometimes it is no.
Sometimes it is, “Wait.”
Paul prayed three times for God to remove his “thorn in the flesh.” God didn’t remove it. Instead, He told Paul:
“My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” — 2 Corinthians 12:9
God’s refusal wasn’t a failure of prayer. God had a greater purpose.
Prayer is not about getting God to do what we want.
Prayer is about trusting God with what we want.
So Ask!
Maybe there is something you’ve been carrying for a long time.
Maybe you need God’s help with a decision.
Maybe there is a dream you’ve been afraid to bring before Him.
Maybe you need healing in a relationship.
Maybe you need financial provision.
Maybe you need wisdom about the future.
Maybe you simply need strength to get through today.
Ask God.
Bring it honestly before Him. Tell Him what you want. Tell Him what you fear. Tell Him what you need.
Then trust Him with the answer.
Jesus said:
“You fathers—if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead?” — Matthew 7:9
Our heavenly Father is good. He loves His children.
So don’t spend your life worrying about things you could be praying about.
Ask God. Seek God. Trust God.
And when the answer comes—whether it is yes, no, or wait—continue to trust Him.
Because sometimes the reason we don’t have what we need is simply this:
We haven’t asked.
A Prayer
Father, thank You that I can come to You with everything that is on my heart. Forgive me for the times I have tried to handle everything on my own. Teach me to ask You boldly, but also to trust You completely. Help me to desire Your will above my own. Give me wisdom to know what to ask for and faith to trust You with the answer. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
