How the Holy Spirit Changed Ordinary People

The Book of Acts is often called the “Acts of the Holy Spirit” because it records the powerful work of the Holy Spirit in and through ordinary believers. Again and again we read that people were “filled with the Holy Spirit,” and when they were, something happened.

Sometimes the results were dramatic. Other times they were practical and deeply transformative. While not every person experienced the exact same manifestations, there were clear signs that accompanied the Spirit’s filling.

Let’s look at some of the signs found throughout the Book of Acts.

1. Boldness in Witnessing

One of the most common signs of being filled with the Holy Spirit was boldness.

After Peter had denied Jesus three times, he was fearful and intimidated. Yet after being filled with the Spirit on the Day of Pentecost, he stood before thousands and boldly proclaimed the gospel.

Later, after believers prayed together in the face of persecution:

“After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness.” (Acts 4:31)

The Holy Spirit transforms fearful believers into courageous witnesses.

2. Speaking in Tongues

Speaking in tongues occurred several times when people received the Holy Spirit.

On the Day of Pentecost:

“Everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.” (Acts 2:4)

At the house of Cornelius:

“For they heard them speaking in other tongues and praising God.” (Acts 10:46)

When Paul laid hands on believers in Ephesus:

“The Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in other tongues and prophesied.” (Acts 19:6)

While speaking in tongues was not mentioned every time someone was filled with the Spirit, it was certainly one of the recurring signs.

3. Praise and Worship

Spirit-filled people often overflowed with worship.

At Cornelius’ house, the believers were heard “speaking in tongues and praising God” (Acts 10:46).

The Holy Spirit magnifies Jesus and fills hearts with gratitude, worship, and adoration. Throughout Acts, believers are continually found praising God for His goodness and mighty works.

4. Prophecy

Prophecy frequently accompanied the work of the Holy Spirit.

Peter explained Pentecost by quoting Joel:

“Your sons and daughters will prophesy.”

In Ephesus:

“The Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in other tongues and prophesied.” (Acts 19:6)

The Spirit often gave believers inspired words that strengthened, encouraged, and directed God’s people.

5. Miraculous Healings

The Holy Spirit empowered believers to minister healing to the sick.

Peter healed the lame man at the temple gate (Acts 3).

Many people were healed through the ministry of the apostles:

“Many signs and wonders were regularly done among the people through the apostles.” (Acts 5:12)

Philip’s ministry in Samaria was marked by healings, and Paul saw numerous miracles throughout his missionary journeys.

The same Spirit who empowered Jesus continued His healing ministry through His followers.

6. Miracles and Signs

Healing was only one category of miracles.

Acts records prison doors opening, angelic interventions, supernatural protection, people being delivered from evil spirits, and extraordinary miracles through Paul.

The Holy Spirit demonstrated God’s power in ways that confirmed the gospel message.

7. Joy

Spirit-filled believers were marked by joy even during hardship.

After persecution:

“The disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 13:52)

This joy was not dependent on circumstances. It was a supernatural work of God’s Spirit within them.

8. Courage During Persecution

The early church faced intense opposition, yet Spirit-filled believers repeatedly displayed remarkable courage.

Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit, stood before hostile religious leaders and boldly proclaimed Christ.

Paul endured beatings, imprisonment, and threats but continued preaching everywhere he went.

The Spirit gave believers strength to endure suffering without compromising their faith.

9. Wisdom

The Spirit gave believers supernatural wisdom.

When the church selected leaders:

“Choose seven men who are well respected and are full of the Spirit and wisdom.” (Acts 6:3)

Stephen was described as a man full of faith, wisdom, and the Holy Spirit.

Spirit-filled people make better decisions because they learn to hear and follow God’s direction.

10. Love and Unity

The Holy Spirit created remarkable unity among believers.

Acts describes the church as being “one in heart and mind.”

They shared their possessions, cared for one another, and demonstrated sacrificial love.

A Spirit-filled church is not merely powerful—it is loving.

11. Generosity

One of the often-overlooked signs of the Spirit’s work was generosity.

Believers sold property, shared resources, and ensured that no one among them was in need.

The Holy Spirit loosened their grip on material things and opened their hearts toward others.

12. Spiritual Discernment

The Holy Spirit gave believers insight and discernment.

Peter discerned the deception of Ananias and Sapphira.

Paul recognized demonic influence in Philippi and cast out an evil spirit.

The Spirit helped believers see beyond appearances and respond according to God’s wisdom.

13. A Visible Sense of God’s Presence

Sometimes God’s presence became dramatically evident.

At Pentecost there was the sound of a mighty rushing wind and what appeared to be tongues of fire.

In Acts 4:31, the place where believers prayed was shaken.

Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at God’s right hand.

The Holy Spirit made God’s presence unmistakably real.

What Is the Greatest Sign?

When many people think of the Holy Spirit, they immediately think of tongues, miracles, or supernatural manifestations. These are certainly found in Acts.

However, the most consistent sign may be transformed lives.

Fearful people became courageous. Self-centered people became generous. Divided people became united. Ordinary people became powerful witnesses for Christ.

The Holy Spirit’s greatest work is not merely giving us experiences—it is making us more effective followers of Jesus.

Final Thoughts

The Book of Acts shows that when people are filled with the Holy Spirit, things happen. Sometimes there are miraculous manifestations. Sometimes there is bold preaching, wisdom, joy, generosity, or courage.

The common thread is this: people who are filled with the Holy Spirit become empowered to live and serve beyond their natural abilities.

The same Holy Spirit who filled the believers in Acts is available today.

May God fill us afresh with His Spirit so that we can boldly proclaim Christ, love people deeply, serve faithfully, and experience His power in our generation.
