“Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” — Acts 16:30-31
It is one of the most important questions ever asked.
Not, “How can I be happier?”
Not, “How can I become successful?”
Not, “How can I live longer?”
The Philippian jailer asked the question that every human heart must eventually answer:
“What must I do to be saved?”

His question is just as relevant today as it was two thousand years ago.
Why Do We Need Saving?
Many people don’t think they need to be saved because they consider themselves to be good people. They compare themselves to others and conclude that they’re doing just fine.
The Bible presents a different picture.
“For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.” (Romans 3:23)
Sin is more than breaking rules. It is living independently from God—going our own way instead of His. Every one of us has done that.
Because God is perfectly holy, sin separates us from Him.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
Our greatest problem is not financial, physical, political, or emotional. Our greatest problem is that we have been separated from our Creator.
Can Good Works Save Us?
Many people hope that their good deeds will outweigh their bad ones.
The Bible clearly says otherwise.
“God saved you by His grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)
No amount of charity, church attendance, religious rituals, or moral living can erase our sin.
If we could save ourselves, Jesus would never have needed to die on the cross.
God’s Amazing Solution
The heart of the Gospel is that God did for us what we could never do for ourselves.
“But God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” (Romans 5:8)
Jesus lived the perfect life we could never live.
He willingly died in our place, taking the penalty for our sins.
Three days later He rose from the dead, proving His victory over sin and death.
Salvation is not earned.
It is received.
What Must We Do?
The jailer asked, “What must I do to be saved?”
Paul’s answer was beautifully simple:
“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.” (Acts 16:31)
Biblical belief is much more than agreeing with facts.
It means placing your complete trust in Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord.
It involves:
- Admitting that you are a sinner.
- Believing that Jesus died and rose again for you.
- Turning from your sin in repentance.
- Trusting Christ alone for your salvation.
- Following Him as Lord of your life.
Salvation Is by Grace
Grace means receiving what we do not deserve.
We deserve judgment.
God offers forgiveness.
We deserve separation.
God offers adoption into His family.
We deserve death.
God offers eternal life.
This is why the Gospel is called Good News.
Can We Know We Are Saved?
The Bible says yes.
“I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life.” (1 John 5:13)
God does not want His children living in constant uncertainty.
Our confidence rests not in our performance but in God’s promise.
Those who have trusted Christ belong to Him.
A Personal Invitation
Perhaps you’ve tried to be a good person.
Perhaps you’ve never really considered this question before.
Today, Jesus invites you to come to Him.
He offers forgiveness instead of guilt.
Peace instead of fear.
Hope instead of despair.
Eternal life instead of eternal separation from God.
The invitation is open to everyone.
“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:13)
If you have never placed your trust in Christ, today can be the day your life changes forever.
A Simple Prayer
If this expresses the desire of your heart, you may pray something like this:
“Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and cannot save myself. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins and rising again. I turn from my sin and place my trust in You alone. Forgive me, make me Your child, and help me follow You for the rest of my life. Thank You for the gift of eternal life. Amen.”
Remember, these words themselves do not save you. Salvation comes through genuine faith in Jesus Christ.
Final Thoughts
The most important decision you will ever make is what you do with Jesus Christ.
One day, every other achievement, possession, and accomplishment will fade away.
But your relationship with God will last forever.
The question still echoes through history:
“What must I do to be saved?”
God’s answer remains wonderfully clear:
“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.”
